Ribbed Holly Bowls
Ribbed holly bowl series.
Description
A series of ribbed holly bowls turned on a pole-lathe. I really enjoy turning these bowls ever since discovering that unseasoned holly is so waxy that I could let my hook tool achieve very fine detail and finish. As the wood dries it moves to a very organic shape, yet the toolmarks and detail remain sharp unlike some other woods. As such these have become a signature bowl of mine. Initially these were made with shearing cuts with the hook tool, but these days I cut each rib in a series of controlled and delicate cuts. I’ve taken special care to remove the stub marks in various patterns. The urushi finish to these bowls really highlights all these details and makes a truly unique bowl.
